On May 25, 2012 at 7:30am, Universal Studio’s new 3D Transformers ride officially opened to the public. The new ride occupies the lower level space where “Backdraft” pyrotechnics and “Special Effects Stage” used to reside. Both critics and casual movie-goers agree: the ride is a mind-blowing sensory experience beyond the movies.
Transformers: The Ride 3D is a thrill ride that will keep you guessing; blurring the lines between fiction and reality. HD 3D media and flight simulation technology come together to create an epic war zone experience. The ride lives up to its name in immersing guests into its world as participants rather than spectators. In the waiting hallways training videos address riders as recruits for an upcoming apocalyptic battle. During the ride, you can fight Decepticons and protect AllSpark along with Optimus.
The ride is a complete sensory immersion using the latest in entertainment technology. 12 people ride on an “EVAC” vehicle on 2000 feet of roller coast track, witnessing a 6-minute battle on 14 super-high-definition screens as large as 60 feet tall. All of these elements work with special water, wind and smoke effects to create a 4D experience of a lifetime.
“When you go see a movie, even if you bring something forward in the screen, it’s always going to be cut off by the border of the screen,” explains Jeff White, a visual effects supervisor at ILM who’s worked on all three Transformers films as well as the new ride. “The ride was entirely new for us. The audience can’t see the edges of the screen, so we can bring our characters as far forward in 3-D as we wanted to.”
Michael Bay, director of the Transformers film franchise, had a part in collaborating with Universal on the ride, although it has its own unique storyline. A similar attraction called Transformers: The Ride, opened last December in Universal Studios Singapore.
Guests must be 40” tall to ride. Children 40” to 48” must be accompanied by an adult 14 years or older. Those staying in hotels by Universal Studios may be able to buy discount tickets to the park, including the Buy a Day, Get 2012 deal. Buy your passes to experience Transformers: The Ride 3D today!
